I'm thinking of having mine done with ionic but wanted to find out as much as possible.
e.g. does it have to be pin straight?! i would love to just have big loose curls without frizz... and if it has to to be straight can it easily be curled with curling tongs?

I have gotten both the Japanese straight perm and the ionic straight perm before. Personally the japanese straight is the best. It does not damage the hair as much as the other product. Plus it doesn't have the harmful chem like the ionic. And i totally regreted paying $200 for that ionic perm, not only did it not really work, it smell bad, and .. sometimes the chemicals are too strong, u can lose hair. That is what happend to me, after a week, i started losing a lot of hair, then eventhougly i got over it. So be wise stick w/ the japanese perm. It's well worth it. If only we can just buy the japanese perm and do it ourself. I can only get my hands on the ionic perm, so it's a bummer.

If I have the thermal straightening done, will I be able to curl my hair with a curling iron to just put some big curls or wave when I want a change?

I had the CHI done several times and I loved it, however I am now pregnant with my fourth child and this is too expensive to keep up. My question is can I now after not having the chemical process done in 8 months have a curly perm or do I have to wait for the new growth and slowly get rid of the straight hair?

OMG! If I could show you all a picture of my shiny (natural spiral and not frizzy curly) hair before this wreckage called Chi straightening, I would. I am in the public eye a lot. I wanted a straight look permenently because I live in a wet humid climate and would have to iron my hair every day if I wanted straight hair. I was very against straightening my hair. I had dark wavy long hair with red bold highlights.
I let people talk me into it. BAD IDEA.
Now, although I have very long straight hair I got very, very, VERY SICK from Chi Hair Straightening formula.
I got the process done. The goop was on for 8 mins. It was rinsed off. Part 2 went on. Washed off. Hair blown dry and ironed to make it "take effect" permanently.
In 2 days I had: RED SORES WITH WHITE HEAD ALL OVER MY FACE AND BACK. I went to the hospital. They put me in Quarentine room and thought I had flesh eating disease, or some very serious disease!!!!
I missed 3 weeks of University, and my life. I am not ever going to be the same. My health is forever changed.
The doctors kept asking me: did you get your hair coloured or straightened? That first hospital stay I said "YES".
I went back to the hospital the next week for 2 more days, as the sores were huge and travelled down my body.
Like I said, I stayed home for 3 weeks.
The chemicals made me very sick.
I had reached my "toxic load" because of that chemical.
I cannot color my hair with traditional hair products from the drug store AND I cannot get it done in a salon! The PPD in haircolor makes me sick after the Chi straightener.
Its been 4 mos. My hair is BREAKING. It is sticking up about 3 inches in pieces as it is broken and is not long enough to lay flat.
Also, it looks really stupid to have curly hair grown in like a reverse perm out of my skull before the straight hair. I have to use a hot iron (of the best quality) every time I wash and dry my hair to straighten the new growth, which comes in very fast! I straightened my hair 4 mos ago and now I have over 3 inches of kinky hair growing in.
AND IM SICK FOREVER FROM THE CHEMICALS.

So, don't be a fool, dont try to be so trendy that you get very ill, these chemicals are very toxic (staightener and hair color). PPD = 8 percent. PPD is in Coal Tar, Gasoline, etc. Hair stylists have a higher rate of lung disease and cancer because of these chemicals.
I have found a colour product I can use now.
HERBATINT. PPD = .8 not even a percent. No other chemicals. All natural. Finally used my first color last week, looks great, shiny and NO SMELL, NO BURN. Get it at a health food store.

So grls, look great, be yourself, improve your looks to suit your self and not trends, do it the least damaging way. Dont use a chemical hair straightener and DONT use a haircolour from a salon or drugstore. If you do, put the name into the internet and look up for example: "Loreal Haircolor MSDS" and it will give you the manufacturer's chemical sheet.
Good luck, look great and stay healthy.
:)
