What is Thermal Ionic Permanent?
What is thermal ionic permanent straightener?
Thermal Ionic Permanent Straightener is basically a three-step hair system designed to permanently straighten naturally curly, wavy or frizzy hair.
What are the three basic steps?
I. The first step, after washing and conditioning the hair, is to treat the hair with Thermal Ionic Step 1 Lotion. This processing lotion softens the curl by relieving the internal stresses of the hair.
II. The second step thermally reconstructs the hair into the new straight configuration. This is accomplished by pressing the hair with a hot ceramic flat iron maintained at 170°–230°C.
III. The third and final step is the treatment of the hair with the Step 2 Neutralizer. This step permanently locks the hair into a "pin-straight" configuration.
What is the active ingredient of the step 1 lotion?
Ammonium Thioglycolate is the active ingredient of Step 1 Lotion.
How long does the hair remain straight?
The hair remains permanently straight until it is cut off or permed. However, the new growth will be curly and a retouch straightening service will be required after 6–8 months, depending on the rate of hair growth and the degree of curliness of the new growth.
What are the benefits of the thermal ionic permanent straightening service?
• The hair will be permanently "pin-straight", frizz-free, silky soft and and unbelievable shiny. The hair will be in better condition after the treatment than before.
• This treatment minimizes static and fly-aways and does away with "bad hair days".
• The permanently straightened hair will dramatically reduce at-home maintenance time.
How long does the thermal ionic permanent straightening service take?
On average, the whole procedure takes 4–5 hours. However, the actual time will vary for each individual, depending on the length, texture and curliness of the hair.
Can thermal ionic be used on previously relaxed hair?
Not if the hair was previously relaxed with lye type relaxers (i.e., sodium, lithium, potassium or guanidine hydroxides). If hair has been relaxed with these chemicals, only the new growth can be treated with Thermal Ionic, making sure that there is no overlap with the previously relaxed hair.
Can thermal ionic be used on color treated hair?
There are three Thermal Ionic formulations available.
I. NORMAL FORMULA
For use on healthy, virgin hair or hairpreviously colored with semi or demi permanent hair colors, processed with less than 20 volume peroxide.
II. Tinted/highlighted/bleached formula
For use on hair previously colored with permanent hair color processed with 20 volume or greater peroxide, bleached or double-processed hair.
When using this formula, it is very important to determine the condition and/or integrity of the hair. If the hair is very porous, dry and brittle from previous chemical treatments, do not use Thermal Ionic on this type of hair. If there is any doubt concerning the use of Thermal Ionic on a specific hair type, perform a complete strand test.
III. Resistant formula
For use on coarse, resistant virgin hair, or resistant hair that has been color-treated using semi permanent, demi permanent or no-lift permanent hair color.
Can external heat be used to speed up the processing time?
No. The products have been formulated to work at room temperature.
Do I have to use a ceramic iron?
Yes. Optimum results are obtained with Conair Pro™, Jilbere de Paris™, Ceramic Tools™, BaBylissPro® or Rusk® ceramic irons, since these irons evenly distribute the heat over the whole plate surface. It should be noted that these irons are calibrated to achieve a temperature of 215°–230°C. This temperature range will produce optimal thermal straightening results.
Can I apply thermal ionic on permed hair?
Yes. If the hair is in good condition, Thermal Ionic can be used on permed hair. If there is any doubt, perform a complete strand test.
How does thermal ionic differ from lye type relaxers (i.e., sodium, potassium, lithium, guanidine hydroxides)?
The chemistry involved with the use of Thermal Ionic is similar to permanent waving and is different than the chemistry of lye relaxers. The Thermal Ionic chemistry is gentler and allows you to re-perm the hair even after Thermal Ionic treatment. Re-perming is not an option when hair is treated with lye relaxers.
Will thermal ionic treatment affect the color of the hair?
Yes. Naturally colored hair may be one to two shades lighter and color treated hair will fade. If hair is to be colored again, wait 7–10 days after the Thermal Ionic service.
COULD YOU COLOR HAIR THE SAME DAY YOU APPLY THERMAL IONIC?
No. Wait 7–10 days after an application of Thermal Ionics (See above.).
How soon can a client shampoo his/her hair after receiving a thermal ionic treatment?
Your client cannot shampoo his / her hair for at least 48 hours. In addition, the client should not use rubber bands, hair clips, or crimp the hair in any manner within the same time period.
How much should I charged for this service?
Since the process will take 4–5 hours, calculate what your income would have been from other services rendered in this time frame (i.e., haircuts).
What is the minimum hair length required for this service?
The minimum hair length is approximately four inches. For shorter hair lengths, it would be difficult to use a hot flat iron efficiently, due to the width of the flat iron.
Can I get more than one application from a jar?
Yes, as long as the remainder of the product is used within 24–48 hours. Once a jar has been opened, it is exposed to atmospheric oxygen which causes the product's efficacy to slowly diminish.

My hair has only got a slight wave in it and the right had side kicks out at the bottom a little. I was told i would receive excellent results from ionic straightening as my hair is not curly and is straight at the top til about half way down. I have never been so disappointed, expecially for the cost ($200 Aus). I have always had to at least blow dry my hair and after 8 weeks i was using my iron.i had previously had the cheaper version done and had better results with this. only cost $80 aus, and took 2 hours instead of 4.

I'm a hairdresser in Sydney and use this method. Best results are on virgin hair... still very good results on mildly chemical treated hair... but i don't do hair that has bleach in it,Trust me.

About a year ago, I had the Japanese hair straightening done to my hair. I have to admit, I was actually disappointed. I still had to iron my hair a bit, and it looked fried, but I have to admit it took less time in the morning than it did when I had curly hair. However, 9 months later, it was time to touch up the roots. I must say that the curliness up top is particularly hard to control, because it's so close to the scalp. When I got it done again, some of my hair broke off at the root. It was a small amount, at the nape of my neck and right where I part my hair. These parts are probably the most delicate, because they receive so much weathering. Suffice to say, the part that is still growing back at my crown is extremely annoying. I think I'm over the worst of it- it doesn't really stick out, and it blends with my hair. But when I put it up the hair growing back at my neck stays down, so I have to use a bobbypin to make it stay up.
By now, I miss my curls. I've been re-growing them, but I don't think they'll be the same. From what I've read of the ionic straightening, it's slightly stronger than Japanese. That means more damage. The first time I did Japanese, it fried my hair- and I had pretty healthy hair. The second time I did it, part of my hair actually broke off. I can't imagine the results of the Ionic procedure. My advice is to not get it done. I know it's hard to accept the fact that there is no miracle treatment, and that all we can do is rely on our flat irons, but I think that maybe we should just fight for curly hair. It was cool in the 80's, so why not now? It's the flat iron companies, the chemical hair companies. They want us to pay them outrageous amounts of money for something that we'll never have- pin-straight, healthy, shiny, no-hassle hair. It's a conspiracy. (wow i sound like a nut)

I used to have overprocessed hair that was always frizzy or poofy so I had to use a bunch of product in my hair and spend lots of time on it just to be able to wear it down and have it look decent. I called a few salons to see how much this would cost, I have hair down to my waist, and most quoted me a price range from $500.00 to $700.00 which I thought was outrageous so I decided to call my neice who was not a professional hairstylist and have her help me. It took about 4 hours, and the product (Thermal-Ionic) cost me $30.00. I could not be happier, this is the best thing I have done to my hair since I started processing it, I don't know how but my hair is healthier than it was before, shinier, and definately pin straight with no frizz. Now I get out of the shower, towel dry my hair brush it and I am done, zero maintenance I love it. I do recommend that you follow the instructions step by step and do not take any short cuts. I bought my stuff at Sally's Beauty Supply, or you can get it at Sally's website. Good luck.

I had my hair thermally straightened in March 2008. I had really thick curly hair. My hair was stick straight even when wet. I paid $75 per hour and it took 3.5 hours. It was a long time in the chair but worth it. Arrange for a consultation with the stylist before getting your hair thermally straightened. Ask all your questions and about the process. Make a decision on where you want your part because it creates a cow lick where your hair was parted when it was straightened. This gets better after your hair has grown back in a few inches. Also you want to have very healthy hair. The girl that did mine said my hair was in excellent condition but the little hairs at my neck were severely damaged. Most of my hair has grown back in but my curl is damaged. I have tried several times to get my hair back to my nice full curls but it comes out wavy. My hair dresser said she noticed that it is not as curly as it use to be. I hope after forcing it to go curly for several days it will become curly again. Also you can curl your hair and style it as you wish. Hope this helps.

After the treatment wears off after so many months, and you would like to go back to the natural curls, would there be any affect afterwards. Such as would the curls not be as curly and be more like wavy? Also what is the price range for this treatment?

i have read all of the comments and i would like to know the truth. i have medium thick kinky curly hair. i have to get up 1 hour early every morning just to wash and fix my hair. it takes me 1hour to straighten my hair and it is only shoulder length. it takes me 30 mins to 1hour to make it look good curly. i would straighten it every day but my arms get so tired and my shoulders hurt. what kinda of cost are we talking about and how can i talk to a live person that is going to tell me ALL OF THE TRUTH good and bad. will this cause hair loss? will hair break and look bad? will it make my hair look fried. does it really work. if all the hair doesnt take how long do you have to wait to re-do it. is it worth it what damage does it cause? do you have to use a special shampoo and conditioner? can you be in direct sun light can you still was your hair every day or will the sutff was out? are the chemicals safe? i am very interested if anyone cares. thank you

Hey, im a guy and, although this sounds odd, i straighten my hair everyday. Im looking for a solution in permanent hair straightening, and i was just curious as to what costs are involved, and how long the permanent hair straightening lasts for (whether over time the bonds between the hair gets weaker)
many thanks

I just used the ionic hair straightner and my hair looks great. But my hair can really take a beating. It is very thick. Some of my hair is falling out but i shed naturally. There were a few spots on my head that didnt take and i flat iron them. But its great to iron my hair for 5 minutes oppose to one hour. So i am mostly pleased.
