Straightening Hair Tips

  • Use a mild shampoo and strong conditioner so that the hair is well protected. You must keep off from any heat -styling tools so as to prevent any damage to the hair. Regular deep conditioning of the hair can give it a healthier bounce and shine. Use good detangling products and wide -toothed comb for the hair after a straightening treatment.
  • Who want to add a bit of shine - Add a drop of silicone serum and watch the tresses bounce. A little care will go a long way in maintaining the straightened tresses.
  • If you are using a straightening iron to straighten your hair, use it with care, and use it sparingly. It can be very damaging if used often.
  • Blow-drying Hair Straight - Always use a protective product when styling your hair straight. Good tools are essential - use a blow-dryer with a strong air flow, not just a very hot one. If blow-drying hair straight regularly, use a treatment, weekly, to prevent your hair from drying out and frazzled ends.
  • Having your hair colored and using a straightener could result in damage to your hair. It's not that either of these are dangerous or damaging by themselves, but when they are combined, they can be simply too much for your poor old hair to handle.
  • Try booking a consultation with a straightening specialist and getting an opinion on whether a straightener would work with what is already on your hair. A professional hairdresser will often take what is called a "test strand" (basically a clipping of your hair) and pop it in to a bowl with the chemical straightener to assess its ability to remain in good condition. If the result is that you should not try this on your hair please take this advice.
  • For a temporary blow out of straight hair, the most effective way for a perfect finish is to apply straightening balm to each section as you go. A large paddle brush will give you poker straight hair, and a round brush will give you a softer curved finish.
  • With the most hair straightening products on the market today you can't permanently relax or straighten your hair if:
    • It has been permanently colored/tinted with a high volume strength peroxide or bleached. Even if only a little is left in the ends of your hair you will need to have it cut out first! Semi or non-permanent colors do not affect the ability to straighten hair chemically.
    • You swim in chlorine water often
    • You have fine blonde hair. It can be done but can look dry and damaged and frizz easily.
  • Here are my tips on hair straightening for people with wavy or slightly curly hair that want it straight but still healthy:
    1. Wash with a regular shampoo that will remove buildup or at least prevent it.
    2. Use a good conditioner that won't weigh hair down but still will condition it.
    3. Once out of the shower, wring hair out until it doesn't drip anymore, then dry as much as possible with a towel.
    4. Apply a little bit of straightening gel before blow drying and in between towel drying.
    5. Blow dry by taking sections at a time and with a flat brush- it takes a while to master exactly how to straighten accurately but it's worth it.
    6. Use a little bit of gel or cream or something to keep it straight and non-frizzy.
    7. It should last for about 2 days, depending on temperatures.

Frizzy, curly short and layered oddly being I am growing my hair out but when I straighten it then it looks great. I see alot of people talking about damage I have not had that issue in 6 yrs since I first straightened my hair. I did a salon straightener once and that totally messed up my hair it made it appear to be more damaged than ever. I suggest making sure you are using a high quality ceramic flat iron (you know not the cheap one at the drugstore?) and you use a hair dryer with high heat and alot of strength to quickly dry your hair. I use only Bed Head products and love them I couldn't go back to anything else if I wanted. I have managed to get polished looks and healthy hair for 6 yrs now and only need a trim every couple of months and it really isn't that damaged. I do think my hair was worse when I left it curly all the time lol. :) hope someone finds help here

Okay, i have curly frizzy dry hair. i use herbal essences hydration its blue shampoo and conditioner. to make sure my hair does not get frizzier i put some lotion in it. then to make sure my hair stays kinda healthly i shampoo is 3 times aweek. ladies, think if this if you straightening you hair and leaving it straight for like 3 days it not only gets oily it gets really dry....and dryeer, and dryier. but if you conditon it all the time then it stays silky and stright. and another trick i use is before you go to bed put your hair back in a ponytale. because when you sleep you swet and it makes your hair curly. but if its in a pontale it away from the swettly areas of your body (your neck, behind your ears, ect.)

I have long brown perfectly curly hair and it only takes me an hour to straighten it with a regualr straightner. Here is what i do:
at night shower, put de-frizz in.
wake up, go about your day, when you get home at night instead of taking another shower, straighten it with finishing spray and iron lotion. then wake up the next day with straight hair. It's not like your not showering or anything, you are but only every second day (that's what hair stylist say to do anyways so your hair won't be brittle.)

I have wavy hair so I shampoo and condition it every other day and deep condition it ever week. I usually towel dry my hair so when it becomes dry, i start losing my hair, like it falls out.
is that because i straighten it every day?

by audrey from atl on Mar 13, 08

all i do is:
get outta the shower
let it air-dry
straighten it at night
straighten it in the morning
& its all good(:
it works; i have wavy hair. try it!
:D

Alright heres the deal i have long hair and it is really wavy. I straighten it all the time and its in ok shape
i recommend that you buy nexxus luxury moisturizing shampoo/nexxus ultimate moisturizing conditioner...each bottle is like $30 a pop but its worth it
i also recommend getting a straighten gel as an alternative to using a flat iron everyday. Ive found Bed Head Control Freak to work well..
and as far as straighteners go get an FHI...its so nice and it releases negative ions to reduce frizz and lock in moisture.
blow drying sucks balls dont do it..ur better off with the gel

i straighten my hair evry morning.
i use herbal essenses hello hydration conditioner, which has helped my hair tons.
right when i get out of the shower i put in loreal heat protecting cream, and then let my hair naturally dry.
then i straighten it while spraying a straightning spray on it as i do each section.

by Charli. from Norwich on Feb 10, 08

When i get out of the shower,i blast some cold water on it , it sounds weard but its really good for your hair! , then i towel dry but dont rub it to much, then i use VO5 straightning gel + cream and rub it ina comb it through with a wide tooth comb, then i blow dry it section by section then straighten it section by section, dont get a section blowdry it then straighten it when the rest of your hair is wet, then when it drys brush it through with a flat brush (use a comb if your straighteners make your hair a bit static).I use GHS straightners, i got them of a stool in the mall, its good to have straighteners with Ion Field Technology -(seals in natural oils and
Micro-Porous technology (locks in moisture)- Hope this helps x
