Straightening Hair Tips

  • Use a mild shampoo and strong conditioner so that the hair is well protected. You must keep off from any heat -styling tools so as to prevent any damage to the hair. Regular deep conditioning of the hair can give it a healthier bounce and shine. Use good detangling products and wide -toothed comb for the hair after a straightening treatment.
  • Who want to add a bit of shine - Add a drop of silicone serum and watch the tresses bounce. A little care will go a long way in maintaining the straightened tresses.
  • If you are using a straightening iron to straighten your hair, use it with care, and use it sparingly. It can be very damaging if used often.
  • Blow-drying Hair Straight - Always use a protective product when styling your hair straight. Good tools are essential - use a blow-dryer with a strong air flow, not just a very hot one. If blow-drying hair straight regularly, use a treatment, weekly, to prevent your hair from drying out and frazzled ends.
  • Having your hair colored and using a straightener could result in damage to your hair. It's not that either of these are dangerous or damaging by themselves, but when they are combined, they can be simply too much for your poor old hair to handle.
  • Try booking a consultation with a straightening specialist and getting an opinion on whether a straightener would work with what is already on your hair. A professional hairdresser will often take what is called a "test strand" (basically a clipping of your hair) and pop it in to a bowl with the chemical straightener to assess its ability to remain in good condition. If the result is that you should not try this on your hair please take this advice.
  • For a temporary blow out of straight hair, the most effective way for a perfect finish is to apply straightening balm to each section as you go. A large paddle brush will give you poker straight hair, and a round brush will give you a softer curved finish.
  • With the most hair straightening products on the market today you can't permanently relax or straighten your hair if:
    • It has been permanently colored/tinted with a high volume strength peroxide or bleached. Even if only a little is left in the ends of your hair you will need to have it cut out first! Semi or non-permanent colors do not affect the ability to straighten hair chemically.
    • You swim in chlorine water often
    • You have fine blonde hair. It can be done but can look dry and damaged and frizz easily.
  • Here are my tips on hair straightening for people with wavy or slightly curly hair that want it straight but still healthy:
    1. Wash with a regular shampoo that will remove buildup or at least prevent it.
    2. Use a good conditioner that won't weigh hair down but still will condition it.
    3. Once out of the shower, wring hair out until it doesn't drip anymore, then dry as much as possible with a towel.
    4. Apply a little bit of straightening gel before blow drying and in between towel drying.
    5. Blow dry by taking sections at a time and with a flat brush- it takes a while to master exactly how to straighten accurately but it's worth it.
    6. Use a little bit of gel or cream or something to keep it straight and non-frizzy.
    7. It should last for about 2 days, depending on temperatures.

my hair is naturally wavy and i hate it i straighten it ever day but because i do that if i dont but heat proof spray on it will it dry out ???

by abby from chicago on Dec 31, 2009

arsha, did you use a conditioner? because a conditioner helps your hair get straight and silky. Also after you straighten it you should put something on like even anti-frizz or a little bit of lotion but don't put too much or else it will look greasy.

Hey!
I’m 13 years old and I use my hair straighter every day my hair is also dyed too. My family are saying that it is drying my hair out and my dad keeps scaring me saying my hair is going to fall out, I do want to stop straightening my hair but the people at school call me prettier when I have my hair straight. One time I left it normal I got teased like hell. But I love having it straight because it does make me look pretty but parents don’t see that though. My parents did ask the hairdresser that we go to she said it fine but then we went to another one and they said it’s bad I don’t know what to do. Could someone please give me advice and send an email to Clarebear2@hotmail.com
Thanks Clare xx

I have curly hair but straighten it every single day and it is very healthy and shiny. It wasnt always like this because I didn't use the right products and I also colored it. Okay here is what I do and my hair is great..
1) Wash hair with a shampoo and conditioner that promotes shine when heated (I use Suave Sleek - orange bottle and cheap) but other brands all have similar products
2) Wring hair out and leave up in a hair towel to dry some. I usually do my makeup then my hair so I wait a little to dry my hair but you don't have it.
3) Take a large clip and section your hair, leave some of it up and the rest down. Before blowdrying or brushing spray in DOVE HEAT DEFENSE THERAPY it shines and detangles.. then brush it through your hair..
4) Use a paddle brush, preferably one that is Ion infused (walmart for like $8).. NOT a round brush.. and dry your hair. When each layer is almost dry I spray TRESSEME NO FRIZZ spray (do not spray a ton because you do not want greasy hair) but spray until you cover all the hair, brush through, and continue drying.
5) Repeat until all of your hair is dry.. Have your straightener heating up when you are blowdrying your hair.. I use the infiniti by Conair.. I prefer the wider 2inch one it's easier. This straightener is under $30 I believe. I have been through TONS of straighteners and this has lasted the longest and is the best...
6) When you are ready to straighten your hair, clip it up like when you are blowdrying and take your paddle brush and straightener and use it to guide you..

The key is to protect your hair, I definietly reccomend those products. Like I said I have naturally curly hair and I always straighten it and it is very healthy. It stays straight through the day also. Good luck and if anyone has questions please email me!

I would just like to say one thing is love your hair as it is . Stop using machines on your hair.
I had wavy hair but i started doing these things would love to share –
1. I massage my hair with herbal or coconut hair oil twice in a week & leave it oily whole day so that it can absorb oil to roots. And wash it next day.. means - you can do this like oiling on Saturday evening then wash on Sundays.
2. I wash my hair when necessary... don't wash your hair everyday... cover your hair when out in sun or in dust. This prevents from damaging . wash your hair with shampoo apply some good conditioner.
3. I apply curd once in two week and mehendi [henna] once in 2 months that makes your hair look shinny smooth... But If you have sinas or migraine problem then think before using henna..it can catch cold badly
4. TO straighten ur hair... when you do these process try not to tie your hair tightly... just put smal clip which leaves half of ur hair to breath freely..
5. visit parlour every month or atleast once in two months to cut of the splits or two ends of hair just give a trim to your hair. That will improve hair growth
6. ask your beautician what hairstyle would look good according to your hair .. eg - it its curl then try some curly hair style. Natural hair is always best just give it some look.
7. Don’t go for ironing n straighten machines tht would make your hair messed after some period of time … try to protect your hair naturally rather than using machines..
8. The best way to keep your hair shinny is APPLY CURD once in two weeks or once in a month can also do.. Don’t apply much else it will end up make your hair loose colour n make it gray or white.
9. Don’t colour your hair. It would look good at start but later give you bad results .
10. As eating is very important for our body same way oiling is very important for our hair.. it acts as food to our hair so don’t keep your hair hungry.
11. And even food plays an important role for your hair..- drink lots of water ,eat fruits, Add salads to your meal, drink juices, milk. Healthy food also leads to healthy hair.
Hope my tips helps you…
PS : If you catch cold or bad headache using curd or henna stop using it…
