Chemical Hair Straightening

Chemical hair straightening makes fuzzy, curly, unmanageable hair soft and silky. It is originally developed in Japan for clients who wanted to smooth out their wavy, unruly hair.

This chemical service is best done on virgin hair, with excellent results. The service can be performed on previously colored hair, or hair that has had minimal chemical treatments such as bleaching or perm services with good results. It is a permanent service which means your hair will not revert to its original texture. It will be straight until it grows out or is cut off.

Once you experience the ease of styling you'll never go back to blow drying your hair straight every morning. Chemical straightening leaves the hair completely without curl. To style, you can simply blow dry and smooth out with a flat iron for silky shiny tresses. Touch up applications on the regrowth is necessary every 6 to 9 months depending on hair texture and rate of growth. This is not a service to jump into lightly. You must be sure you are ready for a permanent change, since this process is definitely not reversible. Proper homecare is crucial. You must use the recommended protein rich shampoo, conditioner & hair treatments designed to maintain your new look. Protein and moisture are the crucial ingredients in these haircare products. Hair that is not properly maintained will become fuzzy, dull and breakage could occur. It's definitely a long term commitment but one that will pay off with the silky smooth hair of your dreams.

Chemical hair straightening, also known as relaxing, involves a process where the basic structure of overly curly or wavy hair is changed into a straight form. Both relaxing and permanent waving utilize fairly strong chemicals that are applied directly to the to the hair shaft. However, their objectives are reversed. While a perm is designed to add curls or waves, a relaxing treatment is designed to remove them.

Chemical hair straightening is not a difficult procedure, but it does require a thorough technical knowledge of the relaxing process. Therefore it should always be performed by a hair care professional with a track record of success with straightening.

It is best to have the relaxing process performed by a professional so that they can perform a strand test to determine the recommended strength of the relaxer that should be used. The stylist will also need to evaluate current hair texture, porosity, elasticity and the presence or absence of any hair damage.

How to Chemical Straightening

The stylist will use their hands or some other appropriate straightening tools to distribute the chemical solution onto completely dry hair. If the hair has any moisture or perspiration, it must be dried first before applying the relaxing solution. Then the solution will be carefully combed through the hair and the hair will be pulled straight.

The relaxing solution is harsh and will be only left on for a few minutes (average time is 5-8 minutes but will vary depending on a variety of factors). The longer the relaxing solution is left on, the longer the effects will last and the straighter the hair will be. However, the longer the solution is left on, the more risk there is of damage to the hair.

Avoid combing through your hair while it is being straightened. The straightening process affects the hair's natural elasticity. When it is combed out, it may stretch out to over twice its normal length and it is very fragile and easy to break.

Straightening Hair without Chemicals

There are lots of good heat-activated hair straightening gels these days, when combined with careful blow drying and methodical flat-ironing, leave hear smooth and straight. However, this process lasts only until the next hair wash. After wanting straight hair all my life, you finally got it straightened using chemicals. Unfortunately, there is no way to get naturally curly hair to stay straight without using chemicals.

I have always wanted to straighten my hair permanently! i hate having to go through the process of waking up super early to straighten my hair with the flat iron. I guess i would consider my hair to be some what long..maybe like down to the middle of my back. I have hawaiian in me, and well lets just say that my hair is curly and doesn't like to work with me. I swear it gets soo poofy after i take a shower!! I want to get my hair permanently straightened but i don't know what to think because some say that it doesn't work and that they aren't satisfied...but some say that it works great! plus my hair kind of..idk its not as pretty as some of the other girls in my school which make me feel kinda self conscious about it and i was thinking of modeling...which is
why i want permanently straighten my hair. soooo my question is IS IT REALLY WORTH IT? SHOULD I CONSDER PAYING SOOO MUCH MONEY TO GET IT PERMED? and SHOULD I KEEP PERMING IT WHEN MY ROOTS GROW OUT?

wow...that was long!

Okay, here it is. Normally my hair is the kind that when I walk out of the shower it fros. After about 30 minutes to even an hour of straigthening, plus sleeking pomade, I still have wings on my bangs, and I have to use quite a bit of the stuff to keep it all down. I've been considering a chemical treatment recently, quite aware of the implications. I'm perfectly fine with getting the special hair juice, since it would save me an hour everyday on trying to style my head, only to have it look bleh for a whole day. My hair is pretty thick and I've never really treated it with any hard chemicals, so I'm pretty confident I can even get it dyed a nicer color before getting it relaxed (although I probably won't.)So I here it is: Would that be a good idea for what I'm looking for (from what I told you)? How much does the operation generally cost? And the hair juice? And say two or three months later my roots are growing out and curly hair is starting to wave up my style, how should I go about fixing that, and how much will my wallet suffer for it?

Helloo,
My hair is really thick and it goes really frizzy and wavey.
It takes me over half an hour-an hour to straighten my hair every morning and thats WITH my mums help!
It really doesn't look nice up or frizzy.
And when I go outside, even if its not humid, it goes frizzy!
So I'm going to try and chemically straighten my hair and I will try and post a comment when I've got it done!

I'm a guy with curly hair. I really want straight hair to try a punk like style. Is it possible? I was just wondering if other guys do it. Also will it make my hair poofy as it already is?

Is it safe to swim in a pool (with chlorine in the water) after a straightening treatment.

Thank you.

Do just any hairdressers chemically straighten hair or are there certain places you have to go to? If so, could you recommend a few in Sydney?

by Emma from Australia on Feb 4, 08

Hey,
I've been considering getting my hair chemically straightened for ages. My friend just got back from Hong Kong where she got her hair chemically straightened and it looks awesome! I was just wondering, what are the best salons in Sydney to get it done and does your hair grow back the same and healthy once you get the straughtened bits cut off.

My hair is very, very thick and curly--when I was a kid and my hair was long I'd use a clothes iron to iron to straighten my hair. I recently went through chemo for cancer and my hair fell out--now it's growing back thicker and curlier than ever! Some years ago I tried straightening it with chemicals myself and it relaxed it somewhat--not as much as I wanted but who wants to pay $300 for straightening? I recommend people try the at home product first--it's much cheaper and less harsh. If that doesn't satisfy you, then go to a pro. Just one person's recommendation.....

I used Ionics to straighten my frizzy yet already straight hair, all it has done is made my hair go very dry, its still incredibly frizzy so I continue to use my hair straightener. waste of money time and effort

hi my name is renee
I have massive curly crazy horrible hair and for the last 3 years i have been getting my hair chemically straighten. It is amazing, it is perfectly straight shining and looks really healthy! I get it done in sunnybank and it costs about $300. (my hair is VERY VERY VERY LONG)the only problem i have with it, is that you really do have to get the regrowth done about every six months. I would recommend this process to anyone and everyone. I do have one questions though, does anyone know if you can perm over the top of it once you want to return to curly hair??

Hi guys, I found the Bio Ionic straightening treatment to be fantastic. Its much more affordable now as well - my hair is softer and silkier than before the treatment.

hi person reading this =D

ok well i got my hair chemically straightened and i loved it rite after i left the salon but then my hair started to grow and well i wasn't so happy the curly roots started to come back so now i have to always straighten my hair with a blow dryer and flat iron. if you are going to chemically straighten your hair then you will kinda have to make a commitment to keep straightening it when ever the roots grow back. Its pretty pricy too and i started to miss my curls cause with my hair after it was straighten.... it stayed that way i couldnt curl it or nothing it was pin straight. and my hair was just up to my shoulder and i spent like $170 on it.

well this is all i have to say from experience hope it helps

by Emmalee from Australia on Jan 17, 08

hey,
for ages now i have been looking for one type of hairstyle that i would feel good with and that just reli looks good...so that i can feel much better about myself and not spend so long always straightening it...so lately ive been looking over the internet just researching hair and stuff...but its still so hard just to find something i like what I can do with my hair that doesnt cost so much...my hair is always in a bad state even though I look after it and products dont reli work...my hair is frizzy reali boofy...and wavy...but the bad thing is its not wavy wavy so that u can do a 'wavy' hairstyle/cut with it...because then it will look funny coz its not wavy enough...but its not straight either...another probem i have is that it is shorter becuse it is wavoer at the back...i reli dont no wat to do :( and i want to be a model but this is letting down my self confidence so if anyone has any ideas please tell me...i dont like anything tooooo average :)
i think chemically straightening my hair might be the only answer lol...but i live in Australia and would reli like to no how much it costs over here...thanks for reading :)

I have super curly thick hair. If I chemically straighten it, will it ever go back to the way it was? When it grows out, will the curl still be as nice?
